Supporting Our Military Families

Every Family Deserves Quality, Accessible Care.

San Antonio proudly stands as Military City, USA, but our service members and their families face unique childcare challenges that extend far beyond those of civilian families. At Brighton Center, we understand these complexities and are committed to providing specialized support that honors the sacrifice and service of our military community.

What Makes Military Family Needs Different

  • Limited Childcare Access: Fort Sam Houston currently maintains the longest childcare waiting list in the entire military system, leaving families with few options when they need them most.
  • Career Impact: When female service members with children on waiting lists become pregnant again, they are three times more likely to leave the military—a devastating loss of talent and experience.
  • Community Risk: Military leaders consider childcare access when making decisions about base closures and expansions. Without adequate childcare options, San Antonio risks losing military installations that are vital to our economy and identity.
  • Limited Provider Network: Too few childcare providers accept military subsidies, creating additional barriers for families already managing deployment schedules and frequent relocations.

A Community Built for Military Families with Special Needs

San Antonio holds the distinguished designation as one of only two “Hospitality Cities” in the United States for military families raising children with special needs. While these families have access to world-class medical care, very few childcare centers provide the specialized developmental services their children need to thrive.

This is where Brighton Center steps forward.

How Brighton Center Serves Every Branch of the Military

Early Childhood Intervention (ECI)

Helping your child reach their full potential, right at home

Today, more than 200 children from military families are enrolled in our ECI Program, receiving the developmental support they need to meet important milestones and achieve lifelong success.

What makes us different:

  • In-home services that work with your schedule and deployment realities
  • On-base therapy at two childcare centers on Randolph Air Force Base
  • Military-informed approach from our team who understands Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves, deployments, and the unique stressors military families face

Our licensed therapists provide speech, occupational, and physical therapy, plus specialized skills training.

Brighton Preschool

Where inclusion means everyone belongs

Nearly 30% of the children at our two inclusive preschool locations come from military families—and we understand why. Our programs are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and combine high-quality early education with on-site therapeutic support, creating an environment where every child can succeed.

What military families love about Brighton Preschool:

  • On-site therapy team providing occupational, physical, and speech therapies right where your child learns and plays
  • No appointment juggling—therapy happens seamlessly during your child’s school day
  • Inclusive environment where children with disabilities and typically developing children learn and play together
  • Deployment-friendly policies that understand military family realities

Around half of our military families bring multiple children, with at least one requiring additional developmental support. We’re equipped to serve your entire family’s needs under one roof.

Leading Change Beyond Our Walls

Brighton Center doesn’t just serve military families—we’re actively working to transform the systems that support them.

Quarterly Training Impact: Our Inclusive Education Conferences reach local childcare centers and preschools, with multiple representatives from Joint Base San Antonio childcare centers participating. These partnerships help implement inclusive practices directly on base.

Expanding On-Base Services: In late 2024, we submitted a comprehensive proposal to JBSA for a dedicated team of pediatric therapists to provide evaluations and therapy directly at JBSA childcare centers—reducing missed work for military families while ensuring children receive timely, quality support.
