3 year old Alana is making great strides thanks to Brighton!

Alana was born on August 23, 2103. That November, Alana began to have seizures on a daily basis and her doctors in San Antonio couldn’t figure out why she was having seizures so they referred to specialists in Houston. When Alana was 7 months old, her neurologist diagnosed her with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). TSC is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in many different organs, primarily in the brain, eyes, heart, kidney, skin and lungs. The aspects of TSC that most strongly impact quality of life are generally associated with the brain: seizures, developmental delay, intellectual disability and autism. At that time, the doctors told Alana’s parents that she would most likely never walk or talk so the doctors referred Alana and her family to the Brighton Center for Early Childhood Intervention services.  Immediately, Brighton Center began visits with Alana. The staff at Brighton Center asked Alana’s mom and dad what goals they had for their daughter, what they would like to see Alana accomplish and those were the goals that the staff and the parents worked on for Alana. Alana received an array of services from ECI and had four visits a week to help her achieve the goals her mom and dad had for her. The ECI program worked with the parents and Alana on walking, talking, feeding herself and play. With the help of her parents and the therapists, Alana is walking, she has some communication, she feeds herself and she plays!  Alana’s family is covered by private insurance and therefore could have chosen to take Alana to a clinic, however they wanted a team like Brighton to come into their their home where she was most comfortable and that they could teach their family how to do therapy and make developmental progress using every day household items.  In addition, Brighton was a much more affordable choice for Alana and her family.  If Alana had received her services in a clinic the family would have had to pay $50 copay per visit costing Alana’s family over $800 a month. Alana’s family invested in her therapy with Brighton by sharing in the cost of their early childhood intervention services at only $10 per month.  It is Alana and family’s like Alana’s that Brighton gets the privilege of working with every day and that our donors support make possible!
